Our latest painting project was the complete exterior renovation of this imposing heritage building in Mackay Street, Thames. It was originally an important Freemasons Lodge but is now the Thames campus of Evakona Education who run a variety of English language courses for foreign students

Before: 1910 heritage building at 415 Mackay St

History of this Heritage Building So far as we were able to ascertain it was built circa 1910 and was christened The Walter Scott Lodge of Light after Walter Scott – a master of the English language himself – and the area Freemason Lodge.

Scott had a major impact on European literature and is probably best known for his historical novels such as ‘Ivanhoe’ and ‘Rob Roy’.

We thought it was rather fitting that the building has evolved into a centre for language learning.

Restoration The project took our team over 1000 man-hours spread over ten weeks to complete and required four levels of scaffolding for access. Some of the original timbers were rotten beyond repair and had to be replicated from scratch using difficult to source hardwood timbers.

We think this work might have included the first ‘corbel brackets’ of this size to have been fashioned in over a century. They don't make ‘em like that anymore.

A big shout out to Nick and his team at ‘Nailed It whose traditional carpentry skills and trade contacts proved invaluable.

Colour Scheme The building owners gave us free range regarding the colour scheme and those we chose were mostly from Resene’s ‘Heritage Colours’ range to keep the building looking traditional, but also with a nod to modernity in style.

We have received dozens of favourable comments from passers-by and the staff and owners have also expressed their approval.

So I think we can claim another successful project.

Thank you Graham and crew! We love our new lady! She sure is looking grand again. Perhaps the best building in town? Or am I just biased. Great work and great team! It was good to leave it all in your capable hands. Recommend you any day. Michelle Van Wyk Evakona Education Thames Campus 415 Mackay Street, Thames.
